Swasti Kulshreshtha

Swasti Kulshreshtha

This story describes a scene from the Hindu epic Ramayana where Queen Kaushalya, Lord Ram's mother, is begging Ram not to go to the forest where he is sent for exile for fourteen years.
-
Generally, there is a lot of brightness in Queen Kaushalya's room but today the curtains are closed and only faint traces of sunlight are entering through the dark cloth. The room is a mess with every item thrown here and there and even the maids were not allowed by Kaushalya to enter and arrange everything, including her bedspread. This is quiet opposite of her as a Queen, amongst all the three queens of King Dashrath, she was always the most orderly, the most queen-like, the most regal, with people looking up to her and taking inspiration from everything she did. But today she didn't care for what the people would say, today she was distraught and she made sure that people would know it. After all, what else could the people expect? She had just received news that her son Ram, who was next in line for the throne of Ayodhya, has been ordered by the king to go into the forest for a period of fourteen years, after which he could return and rule. Even if the people weren't watching her actions, even if she would have been a simpleton, the thought of separation from her son for fourteen years would have been enough to upset her.

Kaushalya had given specific orders to the guards to allow no one in her room except her son. She had already talked to King Dashrath to sway his mind and change his decision but the king would not go back on his words, he had left it entirely up to Ram to follow his orders or not. And Kaushalya knew Ram well, not because he was her flesh but because she had watched him grown up and instilled in him most of the values he had. She had always taught him to be 'Maryada Purushottam', and now for Ram, honour was greater than everything.

The guards outside Kaushalya's door announced the arrival of Ram. Only then did the doors budged for the first time today and let in a little light. Kaushalya watched Ram's frame against the light. She almost could not believe that her son had grown up so much, it felt like yesterday when he was a little boy demanding to eat food only if she fed it to him. Kaushalya knew that stubborn as Ram was, he would never go against his mother and this was the only card she could use right now.

Ram came inside the room and looked at Kaushalya. Her appearance screamed only one thing- distraught. She hadn't even combed her hair which were going every which way. Her saree was loosened at the bosom and she didn't even care to take care of it. She was not wearing any jewellery either. Her eyes were blood-shot with tears still spilling out of them. Kaushalya always loved to play the part of a queen and Ram had never seen her like this before, he now knew that his decision to go to the forest for fourteen years would not go down well with his mother.

Kaushalya immediately hugged him and started crying, "Ram, my son, you are not leaving! You are staying right here and ruling over our kingdom! The throne is yours!" As she let these words out, she couldn't believe that so much had happened in such a little time. Yesterday at this time she was so happy, the king had announced that the crown prince would be coronated soon and take over the kingdom. She was the happiest woman and the proudest mother on the planet then, and suddenly everything has changed. It was all because of Queen Kaikeyi, she got the best of her by asking Raja Dashrath for the debts he owed her for saving his life in battle once. Queen Kaikayi had used them to order for Ram's Vanvas (going to live in the forest) for fourteen years, practically exiling him, and also to make her own son Bharat the next king of Ayodhya instead of his step-brother Ram. Since King Dashrath had made this promise to Kaikeyi long ago that he would fulfill his wishes for saving his life, he couldn't take back his words now and had to honour her wishes. But nobody had imagined, least of all Kaushalya, that Kaikeyi could be so selfish to use her wishes to give her son the throne. Kaushalya had always been good to Kaikeyi and they had always lived as sisters, but now she had lost all respect in Kaushalya's eyes, maybe in the eyes of everyone in the kingdom as everyone loved Ram and wanted to see him as the king.

A long time passed before Ram said anything, he just stood there hugging his mother. He knew this could be the last hug he would get in a long long time. Also, he couldn't speak anything as he was afraid his voice would break, his tears would come out splashing and he would lose all self-control over his crying. He was afraid that he would show to her mother how hurt he was too over the turn his life had taken. Yesterday, he was going to be coronated, today he was going into exile. But he could not let his mother know about his pain. Close as they were, he had to be the stronger pillar for now. Kaushalya had always been a source of support for Ram, even when she didn't knew it, but today Ram had to be the stronger one. Every tear that would drop out of Ram's eyes would only make Kaushalya weaker.
"I have to go, Maa." He could barely say it without letting his voice break.

Up till now Kaushalya was sad, but hearing this from Ram made her angry. She leaped out of Ram's arms to face him. She said wiith angry countenance, "Ram, if your father and your King ordered you to leave, then I, your Mother and your Queen, orders you to stay and rule. You are not going into the forest, this is my order. You have to follow it!"

Ram noticed that his mother minced her teeth as she said this. She was really angry, and wanted this to be the final say. "Mother, please don't put me in such a difficult position. You are my mother, everything that you say is my command. But this I cannot follow, not because I am choosing my father over you or a king over a queen but because if I do stay here then that would harm your honor more than anybody else's. Everyone would say that 'Kaushalya's son' didn't do the honourable thing but if I do my duty, everyone would praise you and your upbringing."

Kaushalya knew that what Ram was saying made a lot of sense but she was in no mood to listen. "I don't care what anyone would say Ram! I have spent my entire life thinking what people would say, as a little princess, as a young Queen but I can't do it right now. I have been brought up in this way and I passed it on to you. I am the reason for whatever decision you are making right now, and I would blame myself all my life for bringing you up in this way. If I only knew then that every value I ever gave you would come back to hurt me in such a way!" She dropped to the floor and started crying again as Ram sat beside her on the floor and took her hand in his.

"Don't blame yourself for my upbringing mother. Whatever you have taught me is my most valued knowledge. I have imbibed your values and I can say this with certainty that these values would stand the test of time. Whenever people would praise Ram for being Maryada Purushottam, they would also praise Kaushalya for making him this way. Whenever people would look up to me for helping them in doing the right thing, no matter how hard it would be, they would also be looking up to you.

"Also, it's not just my morals that are telling me to go to the forest. There is also a voice inside my head, a voice that is all around me, a voice in the breeze, in the rustling of the leaves of tress, a voice in every crow's caw, a voice in the burble of every brook, that is telling me that this is the right thing to do. I don't know what's in store for me in the forest, but I know that I have to go, as if some greater power wants me to go so that I can - how shall I put it into words- maybe discover something. I want to take care of my kingdom, I want to serve Ayodhaya as its king more than anything else in the world, it had been my dream since I was old enough to dream for anything. But I surrender myself to that greater power, if I don't obey it even when I know it in my heart to be right than that would only bring destruction to my kingdom, and I cannot let that happen. I know it in my heart mother that I would sit on the throne one day, that I would be Ayodhaya's ruler one day- it's 'rightful' ruler, but I am willing to wait for it. If the time is not right for me now, then I am willing to wait for it."

"Ram, please don't be so stubborn. I know you are very close to this godly voice that you are describing, it's been said by astrologers, written in legends already. Yet, please reconsider your decision for your mother! I have consulted an astrologer and he has predicted that if you go then you would not enjoy peace for long, some hardship would fall on you soon and it could be big enough to cause problems between you and your wife, Sita. Your decision would not just affect you, it would affect everyone, including Sita. Could you not change your mind even for the love of your life?"

"Mother, I love Sita with all my heart. Even if she stays here in Ayodhaya and I go alone into the forest, I would love her. She would remain in my heart always, even if we are separated physically, nothing could remove her from my heart. She would occupy the greatest place in my heart like gold occupies the greatest repute amongst all the other metals. For me, love goes beyond just the meeting of bodies, just the sharing of words said to each other and duties performed for each other. For me, love is a force that binds to souls together forever, because even if we would be physically separated, my love for her would still remain in my heart, her memory would always be there with me, comforting me in my hard times and her sweet voice would always be in my mind, guiding me through my troubles. And if she loves me as much as I love her, then this would be her test also, she would have to decide for herself if she wants to remain by my side or not. But I know that I would love her anyway.

"As for the great trouble, mother, I would not let it scare me right now. More troubling than the hardship, is the fear of that hardship. I would face it when the time comes. I would not run away from my destiny, I would fulfill it. Much has been said about my destiny by the astrologers already, I have grown up hearing that I am meant to bring order into this world. If this is the moment that would allow me to do it, then I would embrace it. I am going to choose the path that has chosen me.

"Every man faces trouble in his life, I am just the same, a man on the cusp of choosing between the right and the wrong. All my life I have believed in righteousness because that's what I have seen from you, from my father and from everyone else around me. I am not going to abandon my belief because one bad thing happened to me, because someone else's action upset me. The load of sending me to exile is on Kaikeyi mother's shoulders, I would not make it mine by constantly asking myself why she did what she did. I am going to ask that superior energy to help me through this trouble and keep moving on the way that has opened in front of me. Please don't stop me mother, I would hate it if you of all people would think that your Ram is a coward! Give me your blessings instead, so that I can find peace and happiness wherever I go!"

"My son can never be a coward, Ram! I am the coward, Ram, I am so afraid of what will happen to me when you are not here. What would I do without seeing your face or knowing that you are so far away from me where I couldn't help you. I would go to the forest with you, but I can't a queen can't leave her king, and a king can't leave his kingdom, oh, if only there was a rule that barred princes from leaving their kingdoms too! What kind of justice is this?"

"It was fate that brought me to you in this life mother, and I would always be grateful to it. Fate gave me to you, and fate separates us today. But has a man ever been able to go against his fate, no, that's only for the Gods. I know that there is something godly in me, I have always known, but I am also a man for now, bound in flesh and blood. Even I can't stand against what's meant to be. It saddens me that I am hurting you and I have no right to ask this of you but can you please not worry, for your son Ram, can you not focus on the separation and look upto the coming back? Can you spend these fourteen years thinking of the day that we would finally meet again and how sweet would that moment be? Life is meant to be lived in the present but the thoughts of the future make it more bearable. In our hard times we always look to a future where the grass is greener, where everything is better. Can you hold onto that hope for fourteen years, for me?" On hearing this, Kaushalya looked into Ram's eyes with a certain kind of clarity. She held his hand tighter and he could see that the old queen in her was returning. And this was not a queen in title but in her actions and in her demeanor. Even if she was born into an ordinary family, Ram knew that his mother would have done everything like a queen would, with patience and understanding, and she would bring him up like this too, reagardless of whether he was a Prince, a God or an ordinary cowherd.

"And what can I say of justice, mother?" Ram continued, "for it always keep changing for every person and in every yug! For me, justice is going to the forest, fulfill the promise my father made to Kaikeyi Maa, and I am not angry at all. Kaikeyi mother saved my father's life, she earned those promises from my father and she had every right to use it for what she wanted the most. That was justice for her, even if it challenged all our norms and hurt everyone so. And now I have to stand true to the word my father had given, this is what has to be done, this is the only justice I see."

Kaushalya stood up and Ram stood up with her. She hugged him again. "Ram, my son, you have grown up to be so wise. You are teaching your mother now about these matters that I used to teach you about. I can always see a part of myself in you but now I see you for what you really are, you are so much greater, you really are a God. Go and fulfill your destiny, my blessings are always with you, wherever you go." Tears still pooled Kaushalya's eyes but she didn't say anything after this. Ram could feel a power in her embrace, like she was actually transporting her energy to him that could help him survive through anything in the world. Nothing could have made Ram happier at that moment. He had been very troubled since yesterday but now he was full of hope too, thinking of the future when he would return and hug his mother like this again, how sweet would that re-union be!

Finally, he let go of his mother even when she wanted to hold on to him longer and started to go out through the door.

Kaushalya still stood where she was standing before, feeling mentally or physically exhausted, she hadn't been able to move much. She stopped Ram one more time and he looked back at her. "Ram, I know that everything that's happened is hurting everyone, your father most of all, but I hope Sita decides to go with you. I know that you would be taken care of if she is with you. And, my son, if she leaves with you, promise me that you will take care of her, that you would not ask her to sacrifice for the sake of society and other people's words like I am sacrificing today." Ram looked in Kaushalya's eyes and nodded and then went out the door.
He didn't say anything but Kaushalaya knew that he would never ignore her words. But would Ram really keep his promise? Only fate knew that and only time would tell it to Kaushalya, to Sita and to the whole world.

This story is inspired from the poem 'A Scene from the Ramayana' by Brij Narain Chakbast

Vivekananda Memorial in Rameswaram
(The place where Swamiji sailed from)

Vivekananda Memorial is in a beautiful building close to Kunthakal Beach in Rameswaram. The museum commemorates the return of Swami Vivekananda to Rameswaram from USA in 1897.
A Hindu guru and disciple of  Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Swami Vivekananda is perhaps best known for his speech at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. He began his speech with the words, “Sisters and brothers of America”.
                 (Ramanathapuram Palace)

Raja Bhaskara Sethupathi of Ramanad supported Swami Vivekananda on his trip to America. He started out in May 1893 and visited several cities in Japan, China and Canada before reaching America. He gave a  rousing speech at the World Parliament of Religions. Later he toured a number of  cities in America and UK before returning to Rameswaram on 26 January 1897.
      (Swamiji's memorial in Rameshwaram)

The memorial stands on a 5 acre piece of land. It was built with public-private participation. Inauguration was on 26 January 2010. The lofty building with the background of sea engages the attention of visitors when they drive on the tall Pamban bridge (24 m) towards Rameswaram.

The building is painted in bright orange with touches of white. Decorated domes are on top. Visitors climb up a short flight of steps to the main hall. Here the life history of Swami Vivekananda is depicted on photo posters. Life size golden sculptures of Swami Vivekananda and Raja Bhaskara Sethupathi occupy prime spots. There is a meditation hall on the lower floor.

A small museum to one side showcases the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve. Gulf of Mannar has 21 islands and is home to 5 species of sea turtles, 450 species of fish, 14 species of dolphins, 90 species of crustaceans and 6 species of whales.  It also boasts of different types of sea weed, sea grass, mangroves, corals and sponges.

Message to the world - Written on the walls of Rameshwaram temple:
                 (Rameshwaram temple)

“It is in love that religion exists and not in ceremony; in the pure and sincere love in the heart. Unless a man is pure in body and mind, his coming into a temple and worshiping God [Siva] is useless. The prayers of those that are pure in mind and body will be answered by God and those that are impure and yet try to teach religion to others, will fail in the end. External worship is only a symbol of internal worship, but internal worship and purity are the real things.

Without them, external worship would be of no avail. Therefore, you must all try to remember this. People have become so degraded in this Kali-Yoga [Iron Age] that they think they can do anything and then can go to a holy place and their sins will be forgiven. If a man goes with an impure mind into a temple, he adds to the sins that he had already and goes home a worse man than when he left it. A place of pilgrimage is a place which is full of holy things and holy men. But if holy people live in a certain place, and if there is no temple, even that is a place of pilgrimage. If unholy people live in a place where there may be a hundred temples, the holiness has vanished from that place .

And it is most difficult to live in a place of pilgrimage, for if sin is committed in any ordinary place it can easily be removed, but sin committed in a place of pilgrimage cannot be removed. This is the gist of all worship—to be pure and to do good to others. He who sees God [Siva] in the poor, in the weak and in the diseased, really worships God [Siva]. And if he sees God [Siva] only in the image, his worship is but preliminary. He who has served and helped one poor man, seeing God [Siva] in him, without thinking of his caste, or creed, or race, or anything, with him God [Siva] is more pleased than with the man who sees him only in temples.

So you will bear this in mind. Let me tell you again that you must be pure and help anyone who comes to you as much as lies in your power. And this is good Karma. By the power of this, the heart becomes pure, and then Siva [God], who is residing in every one, will become manifest. He is always in the heart of every one. If there is dirt and dust on a mirror, we cannot see our image. So ignorance and wickedness are the dirt and dust that are on the mirror of our hearts. Selfishness is the chief sin, thinking of ourselves first.

He who thinks “I will eat first, I will have more money than others and I will possess everything”; he who thinks, “I will get to heaven before others, I will get freedom before others,” is the selfish man. The unselfish man says, “I will be last, I do not care to go to heaven, I will even go to hell if by doing so I can help my brothers.” This unselfishness is the test of religion. He who has more of this unselfishness is more spiritual and nearer to God (Siva) than anybody else, whether he knows it or not. And if a man is selfish, even though he has visited all the temples, seen all the places of pilgrimage, and painted himself like a leopard, he is still further off from God (Siva).

BRHADARANYAKA UPANISHAD
1.4

1. In the beginning this (world) was only the self, in the shape of a person. Looking around he saw nothing else than the self. He first said, ‘I am.’ Therefore arose the name of I. Therefore, even to this day when one is addressed he says first ‘This is I’ and then speaks whatever other name he may have. Because before all this, he burnt all evils, therefore he is a person. He who knows this, verily, burns up him who wishes to be before him.

2. He was afraid. Therefore one who is alone is afraid. This one then thought to himself, ‘since there is nothing else than myself, of what am I afraid?’ Thereupon his fear, verily, passed away, for, of what should he have been afraid? Assuredly it is from a second that fear arises.

3. He, verily, had no delight. Therefore he who is alone has no delight. He desired a second. He became as large as a woman and a man in close embrace. He caused that self to fall into two parts. From that arose husband and wife. Therefore, as Yajnavalkya used to say, this (body) is one half of oneself, like one of the two halves of a split pea. Therefore this space is filled by a wife. He became united with her. From that human beings were produced.

4. She thought, ‘How can he unite with me after having produced me from himself?’ Well, let me hide myself. She became a cow, the other became a bull and was united with her and from that cows were born. The one became a mare, the other a stallion. The one became a she-ass, the other a he-ass and was united with her; and from that one-hoofed animals were born. The one became a she-goat, the other a he-goat, the one became a ewe, the other became a ram and was united with her and from that goats and sheep were born. Thus, indeed, he produced everything whatever exists in pairs, down to the ants.

5. He knew, I indeed am this creation for I produced all this. Therefore he became the creation. He who knows this as such comes to be in that creation of his.

6. Then he rubbed back and forth and produced fire from its source, the mouth and the hands. Both these (mouth and the hands) are hairless on the inside for the source is hairless on the inside. When they (the people) say ‘sacrifice to him,’ ‘sacrifice to the other one,’ all this is his creation indeed and he himself is all the gods. And now whatever is moist, that he produced from semen, and that is Soma. This whole (world) is just food and the eater of food. Soma is food and fire is the eater of food. This is the highest creation of Brahma, namely, that he created the gods who are superior to him. He, although mortal himself, created the immortals. Therefore it is the highest creation. Verily, he who knows this becomes (a creator) in this highest creation.

7. At that time this (universe) was undifferentiated. It became differentiated by name and form (so that it is said) he has such a name, such a shape. Therefore even today this (universe) is differentiated by name and shape (so that it is said) he has such a name, such a shape. He (the self) entered in here even to the tips of the nails, as a razor is (hidden) in the razor-case, or as fire in the fire-source. Him they see not for (as seen) he is incomplete, when breathing he is called the vital force, when speaking voice, when seeing the eye, when hearing the ear, when thinking the mind. These are merely the names of his acts. He who meditates on one or another of them (aspects) he does not know for he is incomplete, with one or another of these (characteristics). The self is to be meditated upon for in it all these become one. This self is the foot-trace of all this, for by it one knows all this, just as one can find again by footprints (what was lost). He who knows this finds fame and praise.

8. That self is dearer than a son, is dearer than wealth, is dearer than everything else and is innermost. If one were to say to a person who speaks of anything else than the Self as dear, he will lose what he holds dear, he would very likely do so. One should meditate on the Self alone as dear. He who meditates on the self alone as dear, what he holds dear, verily, will not perish.

9. They say, since men think that, by the knowledge of Brahman, they become all, what, pray, was it that Brahman knew by which he became all?

10. Brahman, indeed, was this in the beginning. It knew itself only as ‘I am Brahman.’ Therefore it became all. Whoever among the gods became awakened to this, he, indeed, became that. It is the same in the case of seers, same in the case of men. Seeing this, indeed, the seer Vama-deva knew, ‘I was Manu and the Sun too.’ This is so even now. Whoever knows thus, ‘I am Brahman,’ becomes this all. Even the gods cannot prevent his becoming thus, for he becomes their self. So whoever worships another divinity (than his self) thinking that he is one and (Brahman) another, he knows not. He is like an animal to the gods. As many animals serve a man so does each man serve the gods. Even if one animal is taken away, it causes displeasure, what should one say of many (animals)? Therefore it is not pleasing to those (gods) that men should know this.

11. Verily, in the beginning this (world) was Brahman, one only. That, being one, did not flourish. He created further an excellent form, the Ksatra power, even those who are Ksatras (rulers) among the gods, Indra, Varuna, Soma (Moon), Rudra, Parjanya, Yama, Mrtyu (Death), Isana. Therefore there is nothing higher than Ksatra. Therefore at the Rajasuya sacrifice the Brahmana sits below the Ksatriya. On Ksatrahood alone does he confer this honour. But the Brahmana is nevertheless the source of the Ksatra. Therefore, even if the king attains supremacy at the end of it, he resorts to the Brahmana as his source. Therefore he who injures the Brahmana strikes at his own source. He becomes more evil as he injures one who is superior.

12. Yet he did not flourish. He created the vis (the commonalty), these classes of gods who are designated in groups, the Vasus, Rudras, Adityas, Visvedevas and Maruts.

13. He did not still flourish. He created the Sudra order, as Pusan. Verily, this (earth) is Pusan (the nourisher), for she nourishes everything that is.

14. Yet he did not flourish. He created further an excellent form, justice. This is the power of the Ksatriya class, viz. justice. Therefore there is nothing higher than justice. So a weak man hopes (to defeat) a strong man by means of justice as one does through a king. Verily, that which is justice is truth. Therefore they say of a man who speaks the truth, he speaks justice or of a man who speaks justice that he speaks the truth. Verily, both these are the same.

15. So these (four orders were created) the Brahmana, the Ksatriya, the Vaisya and the Sudra. Among the gods that Brahma existed as Fire, among men as Brahmana, as a Ksatriya by means of the (divine) Ksatriya, as a Vaisya by means of the (divine) Vaisya, as a Sudra by means of the (divine) Sudra. Therefore people desire a place among the gods through fire only, and among men as the Brahmana, for by these two forms (pre-eminently) Brahma existed. If anyone, however, departs from this world without seeing (knowing) his own world, it being unknown, does not protect him, as the Vedas unrecited or as a deed not done do not (protect him). Even if one performs a great and holy work, but without knowing this, that work of his is exhausted in the end. One should meditate only on the Self as his (true) world. The work of him who meditates on the Self alone as his world is not exhausted for, out of that very Self he creates whatsoever he desires.

16. Now this self, verily, is the world of all beings. In so far as he makes offerings and sacrifices, he becomes the world of the gods. In so far as he learns (the Vedas), he becomes the world of the seers. In so far as he offers libations to the fathers and desires offspring, he becomes the world of the fathers. In so far as he gives shelter and food to men, he becomes the world of men. In so far as he gives grass and water to the animals, he becomes the world of animals. In so far as beasts and birds, even to the ants find a living in his houses he becomes their world. Verily, as one wishes non-injury for his own world, so all beings wish non-injury for him who has this knowledge. This, indeed, is known and well investigated.

17. In the beginning this (world) was just the self, one only. He desired, ‘would that I had a wife, then I may have offspring. Would that I had wealth, then I would perform rites.’ This much indeed is the (range of) desire. Even if one wishes, one cannot get more than this. Therefore, to this day, a man who is single desires, ‘would that I had a wife, then I may have offspring. Would that I had wealth, then I would perform rites.’ So long as he does not obtain each one of these, he thinks himself to be incomplete. Now his completeness (is as follows), mind truly is his self, speech his wife, breath is his offspring, the eye is his human wealth, for he finds it with the eye, the ear his divine wealth, for he hears it with his ear. The body, indeed, is his work, for with his body he performs work. So this sacrifice is fivefold, fivefold is the animal, fivefold is the person, fivefold is all this world, whatever there is. He who knows this as such obtains all this.

 1.4

Chanakya Neet || Chapter 1

Chanakya Neeti
Chapter 1

1. Humbly bowing down before the almighty Lord Sri Vishnu, the Lord of the three worlds, I recite maxims of the science of political ethics (niti) selected from the various satras.

2. That man who by the study of these maxims from the satras acquires a knowledge of the most celebrated principles of duty, and understands what ought and what ought not to be followed, and what is good and what is bad, is most excellent.

3. Therefore with an eye to the public good, I shall speak that which, when understood, will lead to an understanding of things in their proper perspective.

4. Even a pandit comes to grief by giving instruction to a foolish disciple, by maintaining a wicked wife, and by excessive familiarity with the miserable.

5. A wicked wife, a false friend, a saucy servant and living in a house with a serpent in it are nothing but death.

6. One should save his money against hard times, save his wife at the sacrifice of his riches, but invariably one should save his soul even at the sacrifice of his wife and riches.

7. Save your wealth against future calamity. Do not say, ‘What what fear has a rich man of calamity?’ When riches begin to forsake one even the accumulated stock dwindles away.

8. Do not inhabit a country where you are not respected, cannot earn your livelihood, have no friends, or cannot acquire knowledge.

9. Do not stay for a single day where there are not these five persons: a wealthy man, a brahmana well versed in Vedic lore, a king, a river and a physician.

10. Wise men should never go into a country where there are no means of earning one’s livelihood, where the people have no dread of anybody, have no sense of shame, no intelligence, or a charitable disposition.

11. Test a servant while in the discharge of his duty, a relative in difficulty, a friend in adversity, and a wife in misfortune.

12. He is a true friend who does not forsake us in time of need, misfortune, famine, or war, in a king’s court, or at the crematorium (smasana).

13. He who gives up what is imperishable for that which perishable, loses that which is imperishable; and doubtlessly loses that which is perishable also.

14. A wise man should marry a virgin of a respectable family even if she is deformed. He should not marry one of a low-class family, through beauty. Marriage in a family of equal status is preferable.

15. Do not put your trust in rivers, men who carry weapons, beasts with claws or horns, women, and members of a royal family.

16. Even from poison extract nectar, wash and take back gold if it has fallen in filth, receive the highest knowledge (Krsna consciousness) from a low born person; so also a girl possessing virtuous qualities (stri-ratna) even if she be born in a disreputable family.

17. Women have hunger two-fold, shyness four-fold, daring six-fold, and lust eight-fold as compared to men.

THEORY OF KARMA

THEORY OF KARMA

❓Why do some students do well in school while others struggle?

❓Why do some earn money easily while others are poor?

❓Why do some suffer while others enjoy their lives?

❓Why do some live longer while others die at
a young age?

➖ The answers to all of these questions is the effects of our karmas.

The theory of karma explains HOW, WHY, and WHAT happens to us. It also explains the role that karmas play in our lives, how we accumulate karmas, and how we get rid of them.

Karmas are the derivatives of karman particles.  Karman particles are non-living matter scattered all around us and all over the universe.

They are very fine particles that cannot be seen even with a microscope. A cluster of innumerable karman particles is called Karman
Vargana.

When you act with passions like attachment, anger, greed, ego, or deceitfulness, Karman Varganas are attracted towards your soul.

Karman Varganas that are attached to your soul are called karmas.

➖THE PROCESS OF BONDAGE

(The following paragraph has been revised from the original.)

Whenever we think, speak, or act, Karman Varganas around us are attracted to our souls.  (This process is called Asrava in Sanskrit.)

The Varganas become bonded to our soul depending on our passions: anger, ego, greed,
and deceit.  Once they are bonded, they are called Karma. (The bondage is called Bandh in Sanskrit.)

The Karma can be furthur divided into two
concepts, Bhav Karma and Dravya Karma.

1. Bhav Karma is the non-physical thinking or activity that attracts the Karman Varganas.

2. Dravya Karma is the physical Karman Varganas themselves that have attached to the soul.

There cannot be Dravya Karma without the Bhav Karma and both of these concepts occur at the same time.  In a simplified sense, one can think of the Bhav Karma as 'thoughts' because mental activity is at the base of all activity of the soul.

However, the true understanding is that the
Bhav Karma is the non-physical part of the Karma.

There are three ways to perform activities: Mentally, Verbally, and Physically.  We can take each of these a step further in three more
ways.  We can perform the activities ourselves, ask someone else to perform the activities for us, or encourage someone else to perform the
activities.  Thus, there are nine ways to perform any activity. Out of all of these activities, mental activities have the farthest reaching effects on our souls.

At the time of bondage of karmas to the soul, four characteristics of karmas are decided. They are:

1) Prakriti (nature).
2) Pradesh (quantity).
3) Sthiti (duration).
4) Anubhag (intensity).

The nature and quantity of karmas depend on the vigor of the activities, while the duration and intensity of karmas depend upon the intensity of the desires behind the activities.

I.  PRAKRITI (NATURE OF BONDAGE)

There are eight types of karmas.  Depending upon your activities, you can accumulate one or more of these eight karmas:

1) Jnanavarniya - Knowledge-Obscuring Karma
2) Darshanavarniya - Perception-Obscuring Karma
3) Antarya - Obstructive Karma
4) Mohniya - Deluding Karma
5) Nam - Body-determining Karma
6) Gotra - Status-determining Karma
7) Vedniya - Feeling-Producing Karma
8) Ayushya - Age-Determining Karma

These karmas are grouped into two categories Ghati Karmas (destructive) and Aghati Karmas (non-destructive).  Ghati Karmas destroy the true nature of the soul.  Aghati Karmas do not destroy the nature of the soul, but affect the body in which the soul resides. The first four
types of karmas are Ghati karmas, and last four are aghati karmas.

II.  PRADESH (QUANTITY OF BONDAGE)

If the physical vigor of our activities is slight, then we accumulate fewer karman particles, but if the physical vigor is strong, then we accumulate larger numbers of karman particles on our soul.

III. STHITI (DURATION OF BONDAGE)

The duration of the karmic particles to be bonded with the soul is decided by the intensity of our desires at the time of the activity. The milder the intensity, the shorter is the duration of the bondage of the karmas. The stronger the intensity, the longer is the duration of
bondage.

The time karmas stay bonded to the soul range from a fraction of a second to an innumerable numbers of years.

IV.  ANUBHAG (INTENSITY OF RESULTS)

The intensity of karmas depends upon how intense our passions are at the time of our activities. The lesser the intensity of our passions, the less severe is the result of the bondage; the greater the intensity, the more severe the result of the bondage.

When karmas attach to the soul, there are four levels of bondage:

1.  Sprusta or Sithil (Loose): Karmas can be easily shed by regret.
2.  Baddha or Gadha (Tight): Karmas can be shed by offering an apology.
3.  Nidhatta (Tighter): Karmas can shed by very strong efforts, like
austerity.
4.  Nikachit (Tightest): Karmas can only be shed by bearing the results.

It should be realized that it is not always true that we have to wait in order to bear the results of our karmas; we can change the course of
our karmas before they mature. It can be changed in duration and intensity as well as in nature too. This is a very important point because it means, that not only we do have control over our karmas, but that we can change our fate. For explanatory purpose let us understand some terms.

1)  Abadhakal - the duration of bondage of karmas to the soul, which
starts from the time of the karmas bondage until its maturity.
2)  Bandh - bondage of karmas to the soul.
3)  Uday - refers to the results of karmas being manifested in normal
during their normal maturation time.
4)  Udirana - refers to the results of karmas being manifested
prematurely.
5)  Satta - refers to those karmas which are dormant on the soul.
6)  Sankramana - Depending on our activities, bonded karmas can transform within some of their sub-types.
Example: Shata and Ashata Vedniya karmas are the two sub-types of Vedniya karmas. Shata Vedniya karma causes comfort while Ashata Vedniya karma causes discomfort. If our current activities causes comfort to someone then our Ashata Vedniya karma gets transformed to Shata Vedniya karma. And, so it works for opposite activities.
7)  Utkarshana - increase of duration and intensity of karmas which are already bonded to the soul.
8)  Apakramana - diminution of duration and intensity of karmas which are already bonded.
9)  Upashama - state in which karmas are suppressed and cannot produce results.
10) Nidhatti bondage - type of bondage in which karmas are neither brought into operation prematurely nor transferred into that of another
sub-class, but may increase or decrease in duration and intensity of results.
11) Nikachit bondage - type of bondage in which karmas do not operate prematurely, nor transferred, nor increase or decrease in duration or intensity of results.
12) Samuddhat - After achieving perfect knowledge, Kevali Bhagwan (Omniscient, Omnipotent) realized that the duration and quantity of Vedniya, Nam and Gotra Karmas were greater than that of Ayushya Karma.
Therefore, by expanding the size and shape of the soul (Atma Pradeshes), Kevali Bhagwan made the duration and quantity of Vedniya, Nam and Gotra Karmas equal to that of Ayushya Karma. This process is called Samuddhat.
13) Shaileshikaran - Immediately before his final death (Nirvana), Kevali Bhagwan went into very pure meditation during which there was no
activity and hence no inflow of karma at all. This stage lasted very short period during which one can speak five short letters only. It is
called Saileshikaran. During this time, Kevali Bhagwan discarded all remaining Vedniya, Nam, Gotra, and Ayushya Karmas for ever.

Karmas obstruct these eight attributes of a pure soul:

1)  Kevaljnana (Perfect Knowledge) - State in which the soul knows everything, past, present, and future that is happening in the world, all at the same time. Jnanavarniya Karma obscures this attribute.
2)  Kevaldarshan (Perfect Perception) - State in which the soul can see, hear, and perceive everything from the past, present, and future all at the same time. Darshanavarniya Karma obscures this attribute.
3)  Anant Virya (Infinite Power) -  State in which the soul has infinite power. Antarya Karma obstructs this attribute.
4)  Vitraga (Victory over Inner Enemies) - State in which the pure soul has no attachment or hatred for anyone. Mohniya Karma obscures this attribute.

The four attributes of the soul are experienced by Lord Arihants. The following four attributes are experienced only when the soul is liberated, when Lord Arihants become Lord Siddhas upon their death.

5) Infinite Bliss (No Joy or Sorrow) - State in which there is no pain, suffering, or happiness; the soul has ultimate peace. Vedniya Karma
obscures this attribute.
6) Ajaramar (End of the Cycle of Birth and Death) - Point at which the soul is never again born. Ayushya Karma obscures this attribute.
7) Arupi (No form) - State in which the pure soul no longer occupies a body and is formless. Nam Karma obscures this attribute.
8) Agurulaghu (End of Status) - fact that all liberated souls are equal; none is higher  or lower in status than any other. Gotra Karma obscures this attribute.

 III.
